A famous Volkswagen collection and a sought-after Mercedes Pagado are the highlights of the upcoming Webb’s car auction in Auckland.
Webb’s is selling five vehicles from the late Jim Wilson’s collection, including a 1952 Split-Window Beetle (estimate $140,000 - $160,000).
Wilson was the founder of Phantom Billstickers, who passed away earlier this year, but spent decades collecting and restoring classic Volkswagens.

Other vehicles from his VW collection include a 1958 Samba Deluxe in red and black ($140,000 - $160,000), a 1963 21-window Samba in blue and white ($190,000 - $210,000) a 1956 Beetle in sage green ($30,000 - $40,000) plus a 1967 Saab 96 V4 ($20,000 - $25,000).
Both the 1952 Beetle & the 1958 Samba won 'Best in Class' and 'Best in Show' at the VW Nationals.
Special attention at the auction will be a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda (similar vehicles have sold at recent Webb’s auctions for over $300,000). It has an estimate of $250,000 - $275,000.

This model was sold new by Marshalls Motors, Queensland in July 1969, later arriving in New Zealand where it was first registered in November 2005. The current owner has held the car for the past 10 years, being just the second owner in New Zealand.
I’ve taken a shining to the 1966 Sunbeam Tiger ($110,000 - $125,000), which was a high-performance V8 version of the British Sunbeam Alphine roaster, designed in part by American car designer Carroll Shelby, and produced from 1964 until 1967.

This car arrived in New Zealand in 2002 and was professionally converted to right-hand drive.
The 2015 Porsche 911 4S Targa ($160,000 - $180,000) also caught my attention. It was imported from the UK to New Zealand in 2016 and has a only travelled 53,000km.
The live auction takes place on Sunday June, 7 at 2.30pm and Webb’s auction house at 33a Normanby Road, Mount Eden, Auckland, with viewing available from June 3.
