With nine ski fields current open, and as its the school holidays, Kiwis will be heading to the snow.
But before you pack your skis and snowboards, make sure your vehicle is prepared for the journey up the mountain.
And dont’t forget, New Zealand's ski roads can change from dry to icy in just a few kilometres. Before you set off, take a few minutes to prepare your vehicle.
Conditions on the roads change quickly.
1. Check your tyres
Good tread depth is essential for grip on cold, wet and snowy roads. Make sure your tyres are correctly inflated and consider winter tyres if you're a regular skier.
2. Carry snow chains—and know how to fit them
Many ski fields require chains to be carried, and road conditions can change quickly. Practise fitting them at home rather than learning on the side of a mountain in freezing weather.
3. Check your battery and fluids
Cold weather puts extra strain on your battery. Top up your coolant, windscreen washer fluid and ensure your wipers are in good condition for maximum visibility.
Pack the car with other essentials for a day on the snow.
4. Fill up before you head up
Fuel stations become scarce the closer you get to many ski fields. Start your trip with a full tank, especially if you're driving an EV or hybrid, and plan your charging or refuelling stops.
5. Pack for the unexpected
Take warm clothing, gloves, water, snacks, a phone charger, torch and a small first-aid kit. If traffic is delayed or roads close, you'll be much more comfortable while you wait.
A little preparation goes a long way. Drive to the conditions, leave plenty of space between vehicles, and enjoy a safe trip to the snow!
