BMW New Zealand has revealed its new-generation 3 Series, giving Kiwi buyers a choice between combustion and fully electric powertrains within the same model generation for the first time.
The eighth-generation 3 Series has been developed alongside the fully electric BMW i3 as part of BMW’s Neue Klasse model family.
The New Zealand launch range comprises the BMW 320, BMW M350 xDrive and electric BMW i3 50 xDrive, with prices starting at $99,900, with the first models due quarter one of 2027.
This is the eighth generation BMW 3 Series.
The BMW 320 and M350 xDrive continue the 3 Series sports-sedan formula with combustion engines, while the i3 uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology.
Despite the different powertrains, the models share the Neue Klasse architecture, digital technology and next-generation user interface.
The new 3 Series also introduces BMW’s latest design language to one of its most familiar models.
The 3 Series features new design features such a sharper grille.
While the traditional sporting proportions remain, the new sedan gets cleaner surfaces, sharper detailing and a more purposeful stance. BMW has also given its familiar four-headlight front treatment a modern interpretation, while sculpted wheel arches and a more dynamic profile distinguish the new model.
The 3 Series has been one of BMW’s most important models since its introduction in 1975, with more than 18 million sold globally.
It has also been a key model for BMW in New Zealand, consistently ranking as the brand’s best-selling and most recognisable vehicle.
The 3 Series is based on the Neue Klasse architecture.
The new generation arrives as BMW continues to transition towards electrification, but the company says customers can choose their preferred powertrain without compromising on the model’s design, technology or driving characteristics.
The new 3 Series therefore continues BMW’s traditional sports-sedan offering while providing an electric alternative through the closely related i3.
Further details on local specifications and equipment are expected as the new models arrive in New Zealand.
The 3 Series is BMW’s best seller in New Zealand.
