The X1 used to be the baby of the SUV family for BMW, but the newly released third-generation proves that it’s now in a league of its own.

Launched here in New Zealand late last year, the X1 has a host of compelling new features to the premium compact crossover segment.

The new X1 combines a new and more prominent exterior styling package, a redesigned interior, greater level of spaciousness and an array of driver and parking assistance systems that are unmatched in the segment.

The petrol X1 SDrive18i is soon to be joined by the electric version in New Zealand, expanding BMW’s range for fully electric vehicles.

The new X1, at 4500mm in length, is 53mm longer than its predecessor. Its width of 1845mm has increased by 24mm, its height of 1642mm has grown by 44mm, and its wheelbase at 2692mm expanded by 22mm.

The dimensions of the third-generation BMW X1 aid in offering elevated levels of space, ride comfort and road presence compared with the second-generation model.

The surface treatment, lines and exterior design details of the BMW X1 display its Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) identity more clearly than ever in its third model generation.

Distinctive design features include powerful proportions, almost square wheel arch contours and signature BMW X model styling for both the front and rear.

The upright front end of the new BMW X1 gives it a greater sense of presence, with slim LED headlights, a large, almost square BMW kidney grille, X-shaped lines radiating out to the sides and chrome strips in the lower air intake.

Adaptive LED headlights with matrix high beam, pulsating turn indicators and variable light distribution add to the new styling touches.

The BMW has the new grille and LED lights.

Expressively sculpted surfaces and a long roofline are the distinguishing features of the new model’s dynamically stretched silhouette. When viewed from the rear, the slim tailgate window, horizontal lines, striking LED lights and flared wheel arches produce a contemporary and commanding appearance.

The robust character of the new X1 is amplified to prominent effect with the specific design elements of the xLine model. This includes satin aluminium finish for the roof rails and window décor, pearl chrome finish for the kidney grille and glacier silver finish for the exterior mirror covers. Underride protection in pearl chrome complements the overall styling package with an elegant touch.

The M Sport model places the focus on dynamic driving pleasure with features such as large cooling air inlets at the front and a striking diffuser at the rear.

The new BMW X1 meets increasing demands for automated driving technologies with the most comprehensive and advanced suite of driver and parking assistance systems currently available in the segment.

Driving assistance features are vast and available at a base specification level with standout items including Adaptive LED headlights, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Head-Up Display, Navigation system with augmented reality view and Driving Assistant Plus with Active Cruise Control that integrates Stop&Go functionality.

The remodelled interior of the new BMW X1, with its new materials, layout, generous amounts of space and cutting-edge functionality, bring an entirely new experience for the driver and occupants.

The new BMW Curved Display with high resolution 10.7-inch Control Display and 10.25-inch instrument cluster is a dynamic feature in the cabin, providing a stylish and simplistic appeal.

Also of note are the floating armrest design with control panel and My Modes experience switch, wireless smartphone charging in portrait style cradle and a redesigned sports steering wheel and availability of M Sport steering wheel that AutoMuse had in the test X1 sDrive18i model.

That model is priced from $69,990 but was topped up to $77,800 thanks to the addition of the Launch Package that included such functions as driving assistant professional (semi-autonomous driving), a panorama sunroof,  Harmon/Kardon Hi-Fi and electric front seats.

I loved the exterior colour of Portimao Blue Metallic plus the interior trim finishers aluminium “Mesheffect” that has a more muted appeal to it.

The BMW X1 1.5-litre three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine.

The BMW X1 sDrive18i features a 1.5-litre three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine with 115kW and 230Nm and provides impressive acceleration while consuming just 6.5 litres per 100km# on the combined cycle.

The engine is paired to a seven-speed Steptronic transmission and double clutch set-up, with power sent exclusively to the front wheels.

The platform for driving pleasure is delivered via a body construction that reduces weight while increasing rigidity, a long wheelbase, wider tracks than the predecessor model, and targeted upgrades to the single-joint spring strut axle at the front and the three-link rear axle.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation is fitted as standard in the new BMW X1, enhancing both traction and directional stability. Other new features include the integrated braking system and the extra, lift-related damping at the front axle.

The sDrive18i has a spacious and comfortable interior, with plenty of room for both passengers and cargo.

Overall, the BMW X1 sDrive18i is a great option for those who are looking for a compact SUV with a luxurious feel and strong performance.
