Lamborghini cars are things of beauty that many of us covet, but one American kid was so obsessed that he stole the family car so he could buy one.

Five-year-old Adrian Zamarripa from Ogden, Utah just north of Salt Lake City set his sights on a Lamborghini but surprise, surprise his mother refused to buy one for him.

Instead, he stole his family’s Dodge Journey to go to California to buy a Lamborghini. That’s a nearly 12-hour drive.

Unfortunately for Adrian not only did he have only US$3 in his pocket but he only made it 5km before he was pulled over by state trooper Rick Morgan on Interstate 15 South for driving erratically.

Morgan helped the preschooler put the car in park and then called Zamarripa's parents, who retrieved their Lamborghini-obsessed son and the family car.

The entire incident was reported by KUTV, which gleaned from Adrian’s sister, Sidney Estrada, that her brother waited until she was asleep to nab the keys to the family car and begin his adventure.

Sidney, 16, was watching her younger siblings while their parents were at work with the car keys on a hook by the front door.

"I saw that the truck was gone, and he was gone, and the keys were gone . . . I don't know what went through his mind," Estrada told KUTV.

Oh we know what went through his mind: imagining sitting behind the wheel of a Lamborghini – rather than the family Dodge!

Adrian will have to save up because Lamborghini’s start from US$200,000.

We’re still stunned that a five-year-old could drive a car.
